Insurance Referral Requirements for In-Network Care

Why does my insurance require a referral to see an in-network Alma Provider?

Some insurance plans require a referral from your primary care physician (PCP) before they will cover mental-health services in-network. This is common with Aetna student health plans, but other plans may also have this requirement.

If your plan requires a referral for off-campus mental-health services, your Student Health Center must send that referral before you can use your in-network benefits with an Alma provider.

How do I ask for a referral?

You can request a referral by contacting:

  • Your primary care provider (PCP), or
  • Your Student Health Center (if you have a student health plan)

Tell them:

  • You need a referral because your insurance requires one for mental-health services

or

  • You need a referral to receive in-network coverage for off-campus care through Alma.

If you don’t have a PCP and are not on a student plan, call your insurance company. They can explain your options and help you understand how to get a referral.

How will I know if I need a referral?

It’s important to know the details of your in-network benefits. If you’re unsure whether your plan requires a referral, contact your insurance company. Their support phone number is usually on the back of your insurance card.

If Alma’s eligibility team reviews your insurance details and finds that your plan requires a referral, we will send you an email asking that you contact your insurance carrier to request a referral.

Once your PCP or Student Health Center confirms the referral, please notify Alma by selecting the Help button in the bottom-right corner of the Support Center.

Do referrals expire?

Health insurance plans have different requirements for referral renewal. To learn more about how long your referral remains active, contact your insurance company.

Do I need a referral for other services?

If your plan requires a referral for mental health services, it may also require referrals for other types of care. Your insurance company can explain which services need referrals and how to request them.
