Use this article to learn what a Superbill is, when you'll receive one, and how to use it to request reimbursement from your insurance company for out-of-network sessions.
What Is a Superbill?
A superbill is a monthly summary of the therapy sessions you paid for through Alma. If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you can submit your superbill to your insurance company to request reimbursement.
If your provider is out of network with your insurance plan, you may be able to submit your superbill to your insurance company to request reimbursement for eligible sessions.
Your superbill includes the information insurance companies typically require to process an out-of-network reimbursement request.
When Will I Receive My Superbill?
If your provider uses Alma billing, you'll receive a monthly superbill by email on the first of each month.
Each superbill includes eligible sessions you paid for during the previous month. Use this information to submit to your insurance.
How Do I Use My Superbill?
If your insurance plan offers out-of-network benefits:
- Save your monthly superbill.
- Submit it directly to your insurance company using their preferred claims submission process.
- Follow any additional instructions your insurance company provides.
If you have questions about how to submit your superbill or what documentation is required, contact your insurance company using the phone number on the back of your insurance card.
Does a Superbill Guarantee Reimbursement?
No. Receiving a superbill does not guarantee your insurance company will reimburse you.
Your insurance company determines:
- Whether your plan includes out-of-network benefits.
- Whether your sessions are eligible for reimbursement.
- How much, if anything, you'll be reimbursed.
If you're unsure whether your plan offers out-of-network benefits, contact your insurance company before submitting your superbill.
What If I Need Another Copy or My Superbill Is Incorrect?
If you need another copy of your superbill or believe information is missing or incorrect, contact your provider directly.
If you have questions about your reimbursement status after submitting your superbill, contact your insurance company.
