Wondering whether medication could be part of your care is common. Your therapist can help you explore what’s prompting the question, and a medication provider can answer questions about your options. You decide whether medication is something you want to consider.
When to Discuss Medication
Bring up medication with your therapist any time the question is on your mind, such as when your progress feels stalled, when you want to understand all of your options, or when you are simply curious about what a medication evaluation involves.
Starting the Conversation
- You can start by talking with your therapist. Tell your therapist you are curious about a medication evaluation, and share what is prompting the question. Your therapist knows your history and can offer helpful context before you take the next step.
- Ask for a prescriber recommendation. If you decide medication support is the right next step for you, your therapist can recommend a provider on the Alma platform that accepts your insurance and has the expertise to support your needs.
- Search the Alma directory yourself, if you prefer. You do not need a referral to reach a prescriber. Search Alma's provider directory, and choose someone who accepts your insurance and fits what you are looking for.
- Book a free consultation before committing to anything. Many prescribers offer a free, 15-minute consultation where you can get to know the provider. Use this time to ask what a medication evaluation involves, and what it does, and does not, commit you to.
- Move forward at your own pace. A prescriber talks with you about your health history, what you’ve been experiencing, and what you want from care in the initial medication evaluation. In this evaluation, your prescribing provider will explain the benefits and risks of medication they may recommend. It’s up to you whether or not you wish to move forward with medication. This holds true whether your therapist encourages a medication evaluation or has reservations about it: the conversation with a prescriber is yours to have either way.
| Note: Your therapist's view is one part of the conversation, not the final word. A consultation or a medication evaluation does not commit you to taking medication, and you decide what happens next. |
Your therapist and your prescriber can both stay part of your care team on Alma, so exploring a medication evaluation does not mean leaving the therapy relationship you already have.
